Academics
Capital Christian Middle School offers a broad range of rigorous academic courses for 6th - 8th grade students. The curriculum focuses on basic skills, a disciplined manner of inquiry, individual creativity and good study habits. The curriculum is made up of core classes and electives for each grade level. CCMS provides an outstanding quality of education unmatched by other middle schools in Sacramento. Our teachers have a passion for their students and their subjects, and they encourage students to analyze and to explore critical thought. Learning is discussion-based and interactive. The end results are students who are well-prepared for high school.
Writing-Proficiency
Recognizing the vital role writing plays in academics and in the work world, the middle school staff is dedicated to the development of students’ writing skills, not only in English but in every area of the curriculum. As a graduation requirement, students are required to pass a writing proficiency test based on a five-paragraph essay (considered a benchmark writing skill). The student has three opportunities to pass this test. The criteria are based upon a rubric representing classroom instruction and writing practice. Scoring is based on a 1-4 scale, with a minimum score of 3 required to pass. Students are asked to respond to a prompt of their choice, to take a stand, and to support that stand by developing a logical and well-supported essay. Those not passing are required to do summer remediation and to retake the test before entering 9th grade.
Middle School Technology
Capital Christian Middle School offers 2 full computer labs, a foreign language lab, and up to 5 computers in each of the 6th grade classrooms to enable students to explore content areas and to deepen their knowledge base. Teachers utilize technology as a basic resource for teaching and learning, problem solving, communication, collaboration and information exchange. In order to prepare students for a changing world and to be life-long learners, technology is integrated into the curriculum, and is easily and readily available to all students. Emphasis is placed on learner-centered strategies that promote active student participation, personal goal setting and self-monitoring, and collaboration.
Math Placement
Middle school offers Math 6, Math 7, Math 8, Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1 and Geometry.
Teacher recommendation, an assessment test, and performance from the previous school year determine math placement. Sixth graders typically take Math 6, seventh graders usually take Math 7, and eighth graders generally take Pre-Algebra. However, based on the above criteria, students are able to take advanced math courses beyond their grade level.
